Are you considering adding a Norwegian Elkhound to your family? These stunning dogs have a rich history and many unique traits that make them a wonderful companion for the right owner. They are intelligent, independent thinkers with a deep devotion to their family. They can be both dignified and silly — calm one minute, racing around the garden like a lunatic the next. They’re known for being wonderful family dogs, especially when raised with children, and they’ll often pick a favourite person to quietly follow from room to room. Elkhounds are incredibly intuitive, and many owners will tell you their Elkhound “just knows” how they're feeling. That connection is real — and truly special. Let's delve into the top traits of Norwegian Elkhounds so you can better understand why they are such beloved pets, and whether one is right for you, because as much as we adore the breed, it’s only fair to share the full picture. These dogs are fabulous, but they come with quirks — for the right owner, those quirks are part of the charm.

The Awesome Stuff
Loyalty & Companionship
Norwegian Elkhounds are deeply devoted to their families. They’re not just pets — they’re shadowing companions, personal guardians, and enthusiastic greeters every time you walk in the door (even if you only left for two seconds to get the mail!).
Intelligence
Smart? Absolutely. Norwegian Elkhounds learn quickly and enjoy solving problems. They thrive on training that challenges their minds — think trick training, puzzle toys, or scent work. They’re the kind of dog that’ll figure out how to open the baby gate and then act innocent while sitting on your couch.
Affectionate and Social
While they have an independent streak, Elkhounds are incredibly affectionate with their people. They enjoy being near you, resting their head on your knee, or curling up at your feet. They’re also typically friendly with visitors and other dogs when properly socialised. Most of ours have been extremely cuddly but they do vary. Our girl Sabie loves a pat but Cuba and Nusa love squishy cuddles!
Family-Friendly
Elkhounds typically get along well with children and can make fantastic family companions. They are playful, gentle, and patient, often developing protective relationships with kids. They're also ideal for active families who love spending time outdoors. It's important though to teach your children to respect your new puppy and have boundaries, to ensure they have a long and happy life together. Ours have lived with 4yr old little humans for extended periods of time, and often have little ones visiting the home and they've always been amazingly respectful, patient and seem to genuinely adore their company and attention.
Adaptable Adventurers
One of the reasons Norwegian Elkhounds have seamlessly integrated into our lives is their remarkable adaptability. Whether in spacious backyards or compact apartments, these dogs adjust surprisingly well. They can thrive in both city apartments and expansive rural properties. Our Elkhounds have lived in various homes across New Zealand, the UK, and Australia, ranging from large homes to garden flats and even AirBNBs on a horse farm during a house hunt. As long as they have their people and daily engagement, they remain content. They also make excellent travel companions, having joined us on road trips, camping, stayed in 5 star hotels and cute little BNBs, and even moved across the globe, handling everything with ease.
Beautiful and Built for the Elements
Let's face it: Elkhounds are captivating. With their wolf-like look, expressive eyes, curled tails, and thick, silver-grey coats, they draw attention wherever they go. Their double coat makes them weather-resistant — rain, wind, cold? No issue. You'll often find your Elkhound trotting happily outside while you’re still zipping up your raincoat. It also shields them from heat, as double coats provide insulation against both hot and cold temperatures. Several of ours even enjoy sunbathing, and we live in Queensland! Note -please never shave an Elkhound in summer — it is harmful, not beneficial as their coat is their protection.
Low-Maintenance Grooming Needs
While they do absolutely shed (we’ll get to that!), Elkhounds don’t require fancy trims, regular baths, or salon appointments. Their coats are naturally clean and odour-free, and brushing once or twice a week is usually enough — unless it’s shedding season!
Hunters at Heart
Bred to hunt moose, elk, and even bears, these dogs still carry that incredible nose. If you’re after a breed that can thrive doing scent work or tracking games, you’re in luck — Elkhounds love using their brains and their noses. Just keep in mind that small animals might trigger their chase instinct, so calm, careful and supervised introduction to cats and other animals from a young age is helpful. We've personally never had a problem with a prey drive in our Elkhounds.
Exercise Partners
Norwegian Elkhounds aren’t couch potatoes (at least not all the time) and they'll motivate you to begin that exercise routine you've been planning! They flourish with consistent physical activity and engagement, and if you don't provide them with a task, they might create their own — such as reorganizing your laundry or digging a new hole in the backyard for no particular reason. They make excellent walking or hiking partners and enjoy activities that keep both their minds and bodies active.
Full of heart
These dogs are emotionally in tune and incredibly affectionate with their family. They love a cuddle just as much as they love a run.
All Different Environs
Elkhounds thrive in all kinds of environments—from mountain trails and bush hikes to sandy beaches and suburban backyards. They love exploring the world with you.
The Quirks (That Make You Laugh... Eventually)
Stubborn as a Moose
As mentioned above, these dogs are incredibly smart. Elkhounds are quick learners, and enjoy challenges, but this intelligence is paired with a strong sense of independence. They are best described as "free-spirited." They'll master a new command swiftly but then decide whether they want to follow it. The key is to make training enjoyable and rewarding. They might wonder, “What’s in it for me?” or think, “I heard you, I understood, and I’ll get back to you after I finish investigating this important bush.” Consistent, positive training with clear structure and combined with humor is very effective. They aren't difficult—just... opinionated! There are examples of Elkhounds competing in Obedience and Agility events. When you collaborate with the dog in front of you, they truly shine. If you treat them with respect, they’ll eagerly rise to the occasion.
Shedding Happens
They don’t need trimming, but they do blow coat — usually twice a year. During these weeks, you’ll find tumbleweeds of fur (or, as we like to call it, "Elkhound glitter!") in every corner. A good brush and a solid vacuum are your best friends. Think of it as your house gaining a winter coat of its own.
Professional Barkers
Elkhounds are naturally vocal. They were originally bred to bark at moose for extended periods during hunts, so it's ingrained in their nature. They will alert you to visitors, suspicious birds, gusts of wind, or sometimes... nothing at all. Early training can definitely help, and we've certainly had quiet Elkhounds. Our Sabie almost never barked in the UK, and now while she barks a bit more, usually only when she hears another dog in the street—she's not bothered by passing cars, or things of that nature for instance. One of our Elkhounds hardly barks at all. When she does, we're genuinely surprised! If you're looking for complete peace and quiet, though, in all honesty this might not be the breed for you or you will have to be very onto bark training from the get go to minimize. Personally, we don't mind if the dogs bark to alert us of something, as long as they are quiet when we give the command.
In conclusion...
Norwegian Elkhounds are a one-of-a-kind breed — loyal, intelligent, spirited, and full of personality. No two Elkhounds are exactly alike! For the right family — one ready to invest time, training, socialisation, and love — the reward is a fiercely devoted friend who brings joy, laughter, and a generous amount of fur into your home.
These dogs are strikingly beautiful, adaptable, and adventurous. They’ll make you laugh daily, keep you on your toes, and curl up beside you at the end of a long day like an old soul who’s known you forever.
Owning an Elkhound is a relationship — built on mutual respect and a dash of mischief. If you’re ready to embrace their history, quirks, and heart, the rewards are endless. They become unforgettable companions — the kind of dog you'll never forget, and they quickly become addictive!
